….as long as you spend it right!
I’ve made a conscious decision over the years to start shifting from buying stuff to buying experiences and from spending on myself to spending on others. This has had a dramatic impact on my happiness and I’m sure it can for you as well.
I believe that money simply buys better choices, and I have come to realise that buying experiences is far more valuable to me than ‘Stuff’ (TVs, couches, cars).
I find it much more rewarding to be buying experiences such as tickets to music events (I love ‘A Day on the Green’ – in a winery sitting on the grass listening to musicians such as John Legend or trips away down south) rather than buying new TVs because I get to enjoy the experience 3 times over…
- Firstly, the anticipation of the experience is almost as enjoyable and as valuable as the experience itself. Looking forward to an experience gives me a great deal of excitement and happiness.
- Secondly, the actual experience itself I thoroughly enjoy
- Lastly, being able to talk about, look through photos and reminisce over the experience afterwards.
So for Christmas last year we had a family rule that we couldn’t buy ‘stuff’ for each other, only experiences.
I have to admit it was easily one of the best Christmases we’ve had yet, as not only did we get to enjoy all those experiences but a lot of them were experiences we could all actually do as a family.
Everyone agreed and from now on we will be sticking with that golden rule for all presents!
That is what life is about in my eyes, creating great memories with family and friends.
The best part is it doesn’t have to mean spending a lot for it to be a great experience, something as simple as a walk along the beach or in nature is awesome and cheap!
